What Happens at Your First Orthodontist Appointment
When you arrive, my assistant gets you set up. Before I come in, she takes everything we need to do a proper evaluation — digital X-rays, a 3D scan of your teeth, and photos. This takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s completely comfortable — no messy molds, no impressions.
Then I come in to talk
Once the records are done, I sit down with you and go through everything I’m seeing. I look at how your teeth fit together, how your jaw is aligned, and what’s happening with your bite. I explain it all in plain language. If you have questions — and most people do — that’s exactly what this part of the appointment is for.
You get a real answer before you leave
By the end of our conversation, you’ll know what I see, what I recommend, and what your options are. If treatment makes sense, my treatment coordinator will walk you through what it involves — how long, what it costs, what to expect along the way. If it doesn’t make sense yet, I’ll tell you that too. There’s no pressure to decide anything on the day.
How long does the first appointment take?
About 45 to 60 minutes from start to finish — long enough to be thorough, short enough that you’re not sitting there all afternoon.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can call us directly and book — no referral from your dentist required. We welcome patients from Truro and across Nova Scotia.
What about kids — when should they come in?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. At that age, I can see how the jaw is developing and whether early intervention would prevent bigger problems later. Most kids that age don’t need treatment yet — but the evaluation tells us what to watch for and when to act.
What happens after?
If you decide to move forward, we schedule your next steps and get started. If you want more time to think it over, that’s completely fine – my treatment coordinator will follow up with you within the next 2-4 weeks to answer any further questions you might have.
I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the first appointment sets the tone for everything. Most patients tell me they wished they had come in sooner once they see how straightforward the first orthodontic appointment really is. Patients who come in informed and comfortable tend to have better experiences throughout treatment. That’s why I don’t rush this visit. You should leave knowing exactly where you stand and what comes next — not wondering if you missed something important. Coming in costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. It just gives you the information you need to make a good decision.
